This writing should be a reaction to some beliefs that victims of rape are the chief instigators of the assault and not the evil doer and criminal, the rapist. If we must blame a girl for her dress of crop top and mini jeans skirt for being an architect of her own sexual assault, we must also blame a septuagenarian who’s raped in her own house, having been robbed. How about a toddler who suffers a critical assault in the hands of a demon and wicked pedophile? Should we condemn her for playing with sand in her diapers? The fact is very obvious; anyone male or female, old or young can be a victim of this social menace. Rather than what one wears, mindset and behavior are much more involved here.
Rape, being a rampant social phenomenon, simply means ‘sexual intercourse without valid consent from either party’. It’s forced, unwanted sex usually accompanied by violence. Rape can happen to either sex as earlier established but it’s essential to note that females seem to be more vulnerable to this threat than their male counterpart.
Annabel was a well groomed girl in her late teens. Due to financial curtailment, she had to be sent to live with her uncle in Agege so that he would send her to university whenever he could. Who wouldn’t think Annabel was so lucky to have had such a generous uncle? Her parents used to bless this uncle in prayers ignorantly, whereas he actually meant to be cursed. This uncle, as a matter of truth, never skipped a day without penetrating her. She was a sex prey, and was dying in silence for the predator had threatened to deal with her in a more strange manners if she let anyone knew about what she was going through. She wished she never wanted to further her studies. She even wished she never had an uncle at all…
Although men also fall victims of rape in the hands of some cougars, statistics reveals that women and girl children are mostly the victims. I wonder why this is the case. I read, that among other reasons which I can never justify, psychological problems constitute major reasons men rape women. Yes, psychological issues may be caused by abuse of drugs and alcohol consumption and may sometimes make one act abnormally but should that vindicate a mature man rape an underage of five or even commit incest? If yes, why doesn’t the same man choose to poison or even decide to jump from the Third Main Land Bridge? To me, psychological problems are not excusable to commit this crime, a rapist knows he’s a rapist and he should seriously be dealt with. Someone even said that a rapist should simply be ostracized.
This crime must be prevented as much as it should. It leaves its victim emotionally and psychologically depressed. Some victims become so ashamed of themselves that they resolve to self-condemnation and isolation. They are full of horrible imaginations, fears and lifetime melancholy. Rape leaves its victims with anxiety, curiosity and physical injury. Health-wise, rape marks the victim with indelible scars of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) such as HIV, VVF and many more. The shame of this, coupled with that of unwanted pregnancy may leave the girl child with no option other than suicide attempt or the crime itself.
RAPISTS SHOULD NOT BE JUSTIFIED: VICTIMS SHOULD NOT BE CRUCIFIED.
